Manchester gets united against racism

Socialist Outlook no. 62, May 14 1994 · 160 words

Racism and anti-fascism

TWO HUNDRED and fifty people marched against racism in Manchester in the city's largest May Day demonstration for many years, organised by the Manchester Unity Committee Against Racism and Fascism, with the sponsorship of the Trades Council.

The march came a few days before the local elections when three British National Party candidates stood in nearby Rochdale.

Tribute was paid to the lives of Ahmed Iqbal Ullah, Tahir Akram, Siddik Dada and Mohammed Sarwar, victims of racists murders within the last seven years. Wreaths were laid at the sites of these Given the importance of the issue, the march should have been bigger. Unfortunately anti-racist forces were of necessity divided on the day with Anti Fascist Action and the Anti Nazi League campaigning in Rochdale against the BNP. It is likely that they would have supported the march.
