Socialist Outlook supporters have been active in the Hull Campaign against the Gulf War from the first meeting. We argued for the central slogans of 'No War' and 'Troops Out', and for the campaign to be part of the CAWG nationally.
More than ever we need a broad, democratic campaign to realise the potential of anti war feeling. A campaign run by invited celebrities and a self appointed committee – an approach which seems to have become increasingly common in recent years – denies rank and file anti war activists a voice. The campaign against the war has nothing to gain by this approach. As socialists, we have to involve people to the maximum.
We have the same approach nationally and locally – build CAWG and the Committee, and support all initiatives against the war. We stand for no exclusions from the campaign, and the maximum participation in decision making at every level. Those who stand against this method of building a campaign – or do nothing to prevent exclusions – should consider the damage they are doing to a united effort against the war.
