There are even promising signs from the Parliamentary Labour Party, where an increasing number of MPs - from a range of different standpoints - are beginning to defy the threats and pressure of the whips, and to speak out independently against government policy on issues including the 'Welfare to Work' proposals, the Maastricht Hands up for the powers of Labour Treaty and support for strikes. Ken Livingstone has even attacked Gordon Brown's Budget.
