War and peace

A RALLY of 500 in the Town fall on November Ist gave a mose one scote or Duk ng a mass anti-war movement in Oxford.

The main hall was packed to hear speakers including Jeremy Corbyn MP. Kate Hudson from CND and Morning Star editor John Haylett.

The size of tum-out meant that there were some unfamil lar faces in the audience, but a lack of any opportunity for disdifficult to assess their political standpoint.

And the meeting also dis played some of the problems that have dogged the anti-war campaign in Oxford, where there is not just one campaign *The Stop the War Coaltion organised and controlled this rally, and - despite a formal agreement that each campaign wil support and advertise the activities of the other - failed to mention the other events including a lobby of local MP Andrew Smith's surgery the following night, which might well have attracted more people.

The Coalition is running stalls in town on Wednesdays local demonstration on December 2. The rival organivigils on Thursday nights.

Socialist Outlook supporters have urged the formation of a single united campaign, but it has settled in to its own patter of activity, with neither offering any oemoardoc struc ture, or the possibrity of more strategic debate.

Meanwhile the scope for wider support is underlined by Ing of three Labour Party wands for an anti-war resoltion forwarded to them from the Trades Council.

There has also been a fowering of anti-war groups in col leges and Universities, with a ru-strong meeang at brookes University.
