Frederick Engels book Origins of the Family, Private Property and the State is both one of the best books on the family and a classic Marxist text.
Engels explained that the family was necessary to the system to ensure the reproduction of the labour force. He meant not only the actual birth of new working people but their socialisation, feeding, housing etc through out their lives Others, building on his work, have since explained how the sexual division of labour in the family is reproduced at the point of production itself - leading to a sexual division of labour there that further compounds women's opbe used by the system to police us to behave ourselves at work and in society more generally.
Socialist feminists always argued against 'lifestylism' - those who argued you should live your life outside the constraints of the system so you would attract others to radical ideas. Today more than ever the limits of this individualism are clear.
We have to campaign for change that will enable everyone to live in the way they choose - to have equal access to services, quality under the law and real choice.
While we engage whole heartedly in these battles in the here and now, real change at this level means destroying the system and its profit motive.
No woren's liberation, no lesbian and gay liberation, no human liberation without socialism!
