NUT Executive, personal capacity TEN THOUSAND buoyant parents, students, governors and teachers marched through London on 30 September as part of FACE's campaign to secure adequate fundIng for education. on the government in the ment the demonstration was a major success, despite being smaller than the one held on March 25.

With massive cuts already implimented in Oxfordshire, Nottinghamshire. Warwickshire and Sheffield, delegations from these ateas made up the backbone of the protest.

Mobllising support in arhave a major impact - ineas — was more difficult but most areas of Enoland were represented. There was even a small contingent from Wales.

The demonstration was officially supported by the NASUWT. Its general secretary Nigel de Grunchy admithad initially been sceptical NASUWT would give it full backing now it was established at the forefront of the campaign against cuts.

With support for FACE still growing among NUT branches, the pressure on Doug menvoy to drop nis ope postion will continue to grow. FACE's focus will now inevitably shift to local campaigning, particularly once the settlement for local gorernment is known.

Nationally up to 5,000 teaching jobs have been lost this year. Demands upon councils not to impliment government cuts will grow as will the pressure on goyerning bodies to set needs related' deficit budjets. dustrial action by teaching students and governors is the is the real solution.
