Dropping the pretence of holding out for an end to human rights abuses in China, Clinton sought to hide behind the powerful US business lobby, which had claimed that disruption of trade could cost thousands of US jobs.
In fact China runs a massive 223 billion trade surplus with the USA: the business lobby are looking not to immediate profits but to the longer term strategic issue of the restoration of capitalism in China, which is being carried out under the control of the same Stalinists whose tanks crushed the democratic revolt of students and workers in Tienanmen Square.
