look was becoming a newspaper I groaned inwardly - a good magazine being sacrificed for yet another Trot 'line' paperl 1 must admit to having been won over. Outlook has maintained a consistently high standard. But being non-sectarian and open should not lead to a refusal to take a clear line on important issues.
I think Gareth Mostyn's article on the FSLN congress in your last issue suffered from this failing. The harsh debate in the FSLN shows that the Sandinistas' alliance is unravelling. While the Frente held power, and maintained a mixed economy and an alliance with the 'patriotic' bourgeoisie, the cracks could be papered over.
But now the FSLN is not in power, Tony Greenstein, editor of Students) by the NUS Presicensorship was endorsed by Thoughtless repetition of libels, without checking your letter from Paul McGarry cora letter from Berry refusing to libel going in a weaselly sort of Way. porters did sign a petition callganiser to distance themselves or so LU supporters at the NUS petition. The LU organisers told the basic question is posed: will it become a reformist, loyal, opposition - or will it crystallise as a revolutionary, proletarian party? The signs are not promising. Not just Sergio Ramirez, but the Ortega brothers appear to be taking what is essentially a line for being a loyal opposition and winning the elections in 1996. Among the Commandantes, only Tomas Borge appears to have an intransigent line. In the ranks, especially the youth and the trade unionists, a revolutionary perspective has more support.
Socialist Outlook, draw the conclusions! The FSLN was a multi-class alliance, wedded to the mixed economy. If the FSLN splits, you will have to make a choice!
Nick Smith London N4 organisers of the petition, that they would not back it.
Since the ban - it was Easter 1990, not hot news as Berry implied in his article, and maybe believed - Left Unity has been the only faction in NUS to campaign against the ban! LU supporter Emma Colyer raised it on the NUS executive. LU supporter Mark Sandell raised it at the December 1990 NUS conBoth Left Unity and Socialist Organiser have a good record of arguing against the view, common on the student left, that we should ban anything we find repulsive. or offensive.
Berry should apologise. More should print an editorial retrac gerated or unfair polemic - is Direct lying about your political opponents on the results for the health of us all, including those who put out the Jill Mountford Socialist Organiser (BPAS), Jolanta Plakwizc (Polish Women's Association)
