London back for NHS

Socialist Outlook no. 31, November 7 1992 · 260 words

AMBULANCE fidence and called for the removal of the managers responsible.

in September, NUPE published a detailed account of the chaos in the LAS (999, The London Misery Line), and called for a full Select Committee inquiry. It took a 36-hour total failure of the computer, costing up to 20 more lives, before Wilby resigned at the end of October.

His departure should be followed by the whole LAS Board, and a full-scale public inquiry must lead to additional funding and a complete reorganisation to scrap the 'business-style' reforms and ensure London gets the comprehensive ambulance service it needs.

This means abolishing the crazy 'internal market system, and placing the LAS under the control of an elected London Regional Health Authority.

No. 31 The Londoners Need London's Hospitals campaign has received an overwhelming response from members of the public since it was launched by pressure group London Health Emergency (LHE) on Tuesday.

Its launch was sponsored by London Labour MPs, council leaders, union officials and hospital consultants and GPs.

It has won surprisingly strong backing from the London Evening Standard and regular coverage on regional radio and TV.

The campaign hotline (081 543 5914) received over 500 calls in the first four days and campaign packs have been dispatched to London commuters living as far away as Lincoln.

The LHE office has also been swamped with letters of support from a cross section of Londoners from all walks of lite.

A public meeting has been called for November 10,7pm at Camden Town Hall, Judd St, WC1. 7 Nov, 1992
