Whether or not the CS gas contrib. uted to Ibrahima's death is really a secondary issue - the point is that he was killed by the police. The circumstances of his death does however expose how the police intend to use CS gas. The police have claimed that it is needed to protect them from violent and armed criminals. This case clearly shows the police using it on someone who went peacefully to the police stalying on the floor.
Ibrahima's friends or family have launched a memorial campaign to fight for justice for him. They are demand. ing:• That the officers involved are sus. pended immediately.
• The use of CS gas is stopped now.
• An immediate public inquiry into Ibrahima's death.
So far one officer involved has been placed on desk duty whilst the police investigate themselves, and Forest Gate police have refused to stop carrying out controversial CS spray tests. Ibrahima is the fifteenth black person to die at the hands of Britain's racist police force in three years. These are not isolated incidents from a few corrupt coppers. They are an inevitable consequence of the increasing levels of police violence and intimidation directed against black people and the urban poor communities more generally.
The campaign is prepared for a long against police repression. Labour movement bodies, student unions and community organisations should affiliate to the campaign and support the demands of the campaign CONTACT: Ibrahima Sey Memorial Campaign, PO Box 273, Forest Gate, E7 Tel: 0181 5558151
