Marzaroli: the changing face
V of Glasgow
Jean Reilly
Oscar Marzaroli, the photographer, died carlier this year at the age of 55.
Marzaroli, an Talian brought up in Glasgow from the age of two, is famous for his pictures of Scotland, in particular his photographs of
Glasgow.
His photographs, which chronicle the changing face of working class life in Glasgow from the 1950s onward, range from wee boys playing football, thrugh men and women working, shopping and socializing, to trade union rallies and Orange walks. One of the most striking features of his work is that it captures aspects of Glasgow and its people which are unchanging so much so that you often find yourself checking the dates on his pictures to confim in which decade they were laken.
His last major work Shades of Grey: Glasgow 1956-1987. a collection of over 300 photographs with accompanying text by William Mellvanney, was an outstanding success. We reproduce here a selection of pictures from that book as a tribute to a great photographer who used his talent to record the life and culture of the Glasgow working class.
