Charlie van Gelderen joined the Trotskyist movement in South Africa in the 1930s. Sole survivor of those who attended the founding conference of the Fourth International in Paris in 1938. He settled in Britain and was active in rebuilding the Italian section at the end of the Second World War. Currently an active supporter of Socialist Outlook.
Bill Hunter is the author of ‘Lifelong Apprenticeship’. Born 6 years before the general strike of 1926, a Trotskyist since the age of 18, he was active in many working class struggles as well as winning militants during the crisis in the Communist Party after the Soviet Union’s invasion of Hungary in 1956. Currently a supporter of Socialist Voice.
Harry Ratner joined the Trotskyist movement at the age of 16 in 1936. He worked clandestinely with the French Trotskyists at the start of the Second World War and reported on the growing radicalisation among British troops as the war progressed. Active as a shop steward he led many strikes and protests against redundancies in the textile machinery industry in the 1940s and 1950s. Member of the editorial board of Revolutionary History.
Livio Maitan is a long-standing member of the Trotskyist movement in Italy, currently a supporter of Bandiera Rossa and on the leadership of the Partido Rifondazione Comunista.
John Archer became an active Trotskyist in the early 1930’s and a supporter of the Pierre Lambert international tendency since the 1970’s. He is a supporter of Labour News.

For the last twenty years international capital has been trying to roll back the post-war gains of the working class - privatising state-owned industry, reducing welfare provision, limiting trade union rights. While this assault has taken different forms in different countries, it has been an international attempt to make the working class pay to increase the profitability of capitalism and make each capitalism more competitive on the world stage. Since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, and now the global fall on the stock markets, this attack is escalating. However, these attacks have met with resistance, from the Zapatistas of Chiapas in Mexico, the landless of Brazil, the revolts which saw the end of Suharto in Indonesia, mass protests by workers in South Korea against redundancies to strikes and demonstrations by European workers and students against the attacks on the welfare state contained in the convergence criteria for a European single currency. Come along and hear about this international resistance and how it can be forged into a movement, which can offer an alternative.
